20170224 – News / What Made THOR Unworthy? Answer Coming In March According to AARON

Nick Fury’s secret will be revealed.

The secret that Nick Fury told Odinson which made the Asgardian unable to lift Mjolnir will be revealed in March 22’s The Unworthy Thor #5, according to long-time Thor writer Jason Aaron. The former God of Thunder and previous wielder of Mjolnir has been « Unworthy » since 2014’s Original Sin, leaving Jane Foster to take up the mantle of Thor.

“I always said we’d eventually find out just exactly what Nick Fury whispered to Thor Odinson that made him unworthy,” Unworthy Thor writer Jason Aaron told ComicBook. “The words have been scribbled in my trusty Thor notebook for years now. Words that speak to the overall story I’ve been telling with this character going back to Thor: God of Thunder #1. The next phase of that story begins now.”

The Unworthy Thor has sent Odinson on a quest to claim a new Mjolnir – that of the former Ultimate Universe. The story will end with a showdown between Odinson and Thanos – and of course with the revelation of Odinson’s secret.

Aaron gave no indication what the revelation would be, but editor Wil Moss did have some insight into how the secret fits into the overal tapestry of Aaron’s ongoing Thor saga, saying, “I remember when Jason told me what it was that Nick Fury whispered, it just felt so satisfying – like, it’s definitely a big curveball, but it feels so organic to Jason’s overall larger Thor story – it feels earned.

« If you’re looking for some insight into who Thor Odinson is as a character and if you’re looking for a sense of where Jason is going to take things from here (both with Odinson and with Jane – and with all Ten Realms!), then brace yourself, ‘cause this secret hits harder than Mjolnir.”

20170220 – Comics News : JIM STARLIN & ALAN DAVIS Team for New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Series, Add a New Member

Jim Starlin continues his journey through Marvel’s Cosmic wing.

Marvel has announced Guardians of the Galaxy: Mother Entropy, a new five-issue limited series from writer Jim Starlin and artist Alan Davis, just in time for the May release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

The story focuses on Mother Entropy, a new cosmic villain created by Starlin for the story. Starlin has created numerous Marvel Cosmic characters, including Thanos, the Infinity Stones, and even the Guardians’ own Drax and Gamora.

Starlin bills the series as a standalone story that is accessible to fans of both the Guardians of the Galaxy films and their ongoing comic series.

Alan Davis did some minor redesigns for the characters as well, giving Star-Lord a goatee and putting Gamora back in a suit that’s « less Stormtrooper and more ninja, » according to Starlin. The series also brings Pip the Troll into the Guardians lineup, something Starlin says he’s surprised didn’t happen sooner.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Mother Entropy #1 is due out on shelves in May.

20170211 – Comics News : Marvel’s SECRET EMPIRE Event Unveiled

Is that a Chitauri cruiser from the AVENGERS movie?

After several teaser images, the plan for Marvel Comics’ next event, Secret Empire, has been unveiled in an article with its Disney sister company, ABC. The Hydra sleeper agent Captain America pushes his secret machinations public in what Marvel Senior VP Tom Brevoort described as « a Watergate moment » which mobilizes Marvel’s other heroes to stop him.

« Steve has been kind of lining his dominoes up around the Marvel Universe to be able to make his move and bring about a Hydra revolution, a takeover, » Brevoort said. « At the point of Secret Empire, they are ready to go. That’s the moment we hit as we go in. »

Nick Spencer, who crafted Steve Rogers’ « Superior Soldier »-style turn last year, will write Secret Empire, with a rotating team of artists to include Steve McNiven, Andrea Sorrentino, Leinil Yu, and Daniel Acuna. Mark Brooks is lined up to illustrate the series’ primary covers.

Since the revelation of Steve Rogers’ sleeper agent status was revealed in May 2016’s Captain America: Steve Rogers, the classic Marvel hero has been shown to be slowly orchestrating a series of events to equip himself and Hydra for a takeover of the world. Rogers has been shown to have orchestrated many of the events of Civil War II, including the murder of Bruce Banner – for which he later took possession of the original Hulk’s zombified body.

According to Brevoort, Secret Empire is where Hydra’s private plans go public.

« We are done with the covert portion, the buildup portion of the program, Secret Empire if the pyrotechnics, the big Michael Bay blockbuster, huge colossal struggles and battles across the Marvel Universe, with all of our key characters and players taking on a big role, » said Brevoort.

Secret Empire comes at a time where all of the founding Avengers save semi-retired Janet Van Dyne (a.k.a. the original Wasp) are either dead, incapacitated, or off the board. With the advent of « Divided We Stand » last year, a newer crop of heroes – many taking the names of older heroes – have become front-and-center in the Marvel U.

Alonso said that Secret Empire will feature all of Marvel’s major teams and families, including the Avengers, X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadpool, the Champions, and the Defenders.

The event kicks off with Secret Empire #0 in April, which Brevoort frames as « the worst day of the Marvel Universe. »

« Where not one, not two, but three separate events break out all at once. Cap, as head of S.H.I.E.L.D., is able to mobilize forces to all three of those situations. And those three situations represent Hydra’s first move. It comes off the blocks explosively right from the get-go. »

Secret Empire is expected to run for nine issues, culminating in an August finale.

20161211 – Creators & Details On Marvel’s CABLE Ongoing From X-MEN RESURRXION Line

It’s about time.

The creative team and plot for the 2017 Cable ongoing series has been announced by Marvel. One-time Cable writer James Robinson is returning to the title, with veteran illustrator Carlos Pacheco, in what is the sixth (and final, for now) X-Men book coming as part of the new « ResurrXion » joint line with the Inhumans.

The big conceit of the new Cable book, according to Robinson, is Nathan Summers’ expertise as a time traveler, with ‘timesliding’ as 1990s readers will recall.

« One of the things about Cable is he’s a ‘time warrior.’ Time travel is part of his make-up in almost every aspect of his history – no pun intended, » said Robinson. « This series will be Cable on a race against time to fix time. The reason Cable must take on this quest will reveal itself as the story and mystery unfolds, but he’s doing it for the sake of the Marvel Universe, which will fall apart if he doesn’t take action. And in the course of Cable’s mission, we’ll see him in a lot of great time periods like 15th century Japan, WWI, the Stone Age, Victorian England, and on and on, all with those time periods made more crazy and sci-fi by time being fractured by the villain of our series. »

While the X-Force founder has had numerous enemies over the years, Cable‘s first big bad is someone new.

« This series, while not throwing out any of Cable’s past, will focus on him as a character for new readers as well as old ones. The villain is a new character simply named Conquest. He’s a technocrat from a future where he’s worked out how to manipulate the butterfly effect of times past to make his reality perfect for his wants, » Robinson said. « That ripple effect has changed the present. Cable has to stop Conquest. Conquest has no intention of being stopped and intends to use all that history has to offer in terms of warriors and villains to stop Cable at each stop our hero makes  in time. »

This new Conquest has no connection to the previous Marvel villain of the same, who appeared Avengers/JLA and Thor. One piece of history that Robinson is keeping in mind for Cable, however, is his short run on the character in 1997’s Cable #44 – #50. Although its nigh on twenty years since it occurred, Robinson remembers it vividly.

« I remember a great deal actually. I had been invited to a summit by the Marvel powers-that-be at that time. I didn’t have a Marvel book then and was invited just to contribute ideas. It was a lot of fun, sitting down with Chris Claremont, Kurt Busiek and others, planning the new storylines, and it definitely made me want to get on a book and stay a part of Marvel at that time, » the writer said. « To an outsider, at that time Marvel seemed to be a place with two fiefdoms. One was the main Marvel characters and the other was the world of X-Men. The two worlds were really apart with many fans only collecting X-books and the continuity being quite separate from the main Marvel U. to accommodate them. I saw Cable as a character that was lost in his own ever-more convoluted back story, and thought it would be great to have him (very much a lone wolf like Logan) as a crossover character that could operate in both the X-world and the main Marvel world–a tired old warrior who’s trying to keep the present day in line and make sense of it for both mutants and humanity. »

Robinson said he’s returning in part to make up for his abbreviated first run with the character.

« Honestly, leaving Cable when I did was one of the regrets I’ve had with my career. I was overwhelmed with life outside of comics at that time and so I just felt it was one book too many to write, » said Robinson. « My leaving helped Joe Casey get a good footing in the industry, which is a great thing, but part of me has always regretted not muscling through and staying on the book for longer. So, when my friend Mark Paniccia recently got the X-books to oversee, we began talking about something for me to do there. Cable’s name came up and an idea began to form almost immediately. And so here I am. »

Cable is expected to debut in spring 2017.

20161210 – X-MEN RESURRXION Kicks Off With X-MEN: PRIME

The new X-MEN direction goes back to « flights, and tights, and capes, and all the classic X-Men tropes. »

The relaunch of Marvel’s X-Men line, dubbed « ResurrXion, » will kick off with a one-shot entitled X-Men: Prime, which picks up directly after Inhumans vs. X-Men. The standalone issue will set the stage for the X-Men’s status quo and introduce the new teams that are a part of the line.

“[X-Men: Prime is] a book that represents the X-Men line going forward, as everyone plants their seeds, » editor Daniel Ketchum told Entertainment Weekly. “We’re just at the tail end of the war. They’re literally picking up the pieces.”

The one-shot will be written by the writers of the upcoming X-Men titles, including Marc Guggenheim of X-Men: Gold, Cullen Bunn of X-Men: Blue, Dennis Hopeless of Jean Grey, Sina Grace of Iceman, James Robinson of Cable, and Christina Strain of Generation X. Ken Lashley will provide art for the issue.

EW also showed off new costume designs for the various X-Men teams, with the Gold designs created by Ardian Syaf, and Blue‘s costumes designed by Jamie McKelvie. Likewise, Ketchum offered insight into the content of the new « ResurrXion » titles.

For one thing, X-Men: Blue won’t be relegated to featuring only the five original X-Men for long. New members will join the team as the series rolls on. “As far as Jean goes, she’s the only woman on the team right now, » Ketchum explained. « This is a reflection of the fact that these are the original five. But the membership’s not going to stay at five.”

Furthermore, with Xavier, Cyclops, and Wolverine all dead, new heroes will step up to lead the X-Men. Namely Kitty Pryde in X-Men: Gold, and Cable, who Ketchum calls the new « patriarchal figure » of the X-Men line. Old villains will also resurface, with Ketchum explaining that one of the main villains of Generation X hails from the original iteration of the series.

X-Men: Prime is due out in spring, 2017 with no specific date having been announced.

20161022 – Comics News : X-MEN Blue & Gold Back In Two New 2017 Ongoing Titles – With Softball Games

Re-living the 1990s with the Blue & Gold teams.

Two more new X-Men related ongoing titles have been announced as part of ResurrXion: X-Men Blue and X-Men Gold. Evoking the color-themed teams of the early 1990s Chris Claremont/Jim Lee/Whilce Portacio era of the mutant books, it’s unclear if the throwback nature of the names will be carried through to the stories and the team line-ups.

« Without spoiling too much about the ending of Inhumans vs. X-Men, the X-Men have been living with a cloud hanging over their heads—literally. The current roster of X-Men titles has been defined by this pervading sense of doom, the fact that mutantkind is on the brink. Well, one way or another, the impending threat of extinction subsides, and this is the story of what happens next, » said editor Daniel Ketchum. « The X-Men have a future. Now what are they going to do with it? »

Fellow editor Mark Paniccia described these two new X-Men books as the « quentessential X-Men team books » of old.

« These are the return to the quintessential X-Men team books. Rosters you’re going to love. The kinds of stories we all grew up on, » said editor Mark Panicia. « You’re going to dig them and maybe even feel a little competition between the books, trying to outdo each other. If I do my job right, there will be readers who are Team Blue or Team Gold. Don’t get me wrong. You’ll enjoy both but you will have a home team. »

« Let’s not skip over the fact that we titled these books X-Men Blue and X-Men Gold! » added Ketchum. « From the top down, we conceptualized these series as our love letters to the characters and stories that made us the stalwart X-Men fans we are today. Both books boast all-star lineups and the adventures they embark upon are fitting of their statures. These are the classic heavy-hitter X-Men, doing what they do best. »

The original blue and gold X-Men teams launched in 1991 when X-Menbranched out from the long-running Uncanny X-Men title. The X-Men‘s blue team consisted of Beast, Cyclops, Wolverine, Psylocke, Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, and Revanche. The Uncanny X-Men’s gold team were Storm, Jean Grey, Archangel, Iceman, Colossus, Forge, and Bishop. The two teams operated in the-color coded designation until a shake-up in 1995’s X-Men #41.

« Extinction is no longer staring them in the face, so the X-Men can exhale and turn their attention back to doing what’s defined them since the beginning: Protecting a world that hates and fears them, » said Ketchum. « These new titles won’t cast the X-Men as members of a species fighting for their survival but rather as big, bright, colorful super heroes who want to demonstrate to the world that they want to walk with them hand-in-hand into the future. They’ll have costumes with capes, a school, and softball games. Oh, there will be softball games. The goal is to tell exciting new X-Men stories while keeping an eye on the tropes and touchstones that longtime X-Men fans cherish. »
