Tom Brevoort discusses the onset of CIVIL WAR II, and the major ramifications that are already in place.

Spoilers ahead for this week’s Civil War II #1.

After two prelude issues and two deaths, the battle lines between Marvel’s heroes are drawn in this week’s Civil War II #1. With the conflict now fully underway, Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort is talking to Newsarama about the events of this first full issue, the deaths, and the stances Iron Man and Captain Marvel are taking.

While Brevoort at times plays coy about spoilers to future issues, the long-time Marvel event editor does give a definitive answer on what happened to War Machine, as well as who he sees as the underdog – and that answer might surprise you.

Newsarama: Tom, let’s get right into it. Marvel has had a hell of a busy week.

Tom Brevoort: Oh, has it? I hadn’t noticed.

Nrama: I’m sure you didn’t get 50,000 Twitter notifications.

Brevoort: That’s typical for me – I’m a very popular guy [laughs].

Patience.

Who Died in Marvel’s Civil War II #1?

Major spoilers for Marvel Comics’ Civil War II #1! Don’t read further unless you want to be spoiled !

Major spoilers for Marvel Comics’ Civil War II #1! Don’t read further unless you want to be spoiled!

Marvel Comics loves their synergy: with Captain America: Civil War doing big business on the big screen for Marvel Studios, Marvel Comics today officially launched Civil War II, an event series that’s been built up for the last month or so in the pages of the comics, and for over half a year in the press. It kicked off with a bang (or rather, two), and a pair of deaths of major, longterm Avengers. This is your final spoiler warning.

The premise of Civil War II by Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez sees a new Inhuman « born » into his powers: the ability to see future disasters. After he sees a Celestial Destroyer annihilating Manhattan, he tells the Avengers, who unite basically every hero in the Marvel Universe to stop it, successfully. That leads to an argument: who’s to say he’s seeing a future that’s even a high probability? Since they were able to avert it, isn’t he by definition seeing only a possible future? Iron Man argues that they need to be cautious, study his ability, and not use it on any kind of regular basis. Captain Marvel says they need to just get to it, and change the world.

Despite Tony Stark’s warning, Carol Danvers takes the very next warning this new Inhuman gives her, and rushes into action. It turns out the Avengers find themselves facing Thanos, who kills James « War Machine » Rhodes in a heartbeat, easily destroying him. The death is devastating to Tony, but Carol and others are clearly in pain over it, too. Indeed, it gives us the most direct Civil War II parallel to Captain America: Civil War the movie, with a familiar scene recreated, this time with Carol in the place of Tony’s film role, cradling a broken War Machine.

In the ensuing battle, Thanos, who was eventually defeated, also heavily injures She-Hulk, who in the zero issue essentially said, « using assumptive knowledge is a bad idea. » Her final words, however, seem to be a reversal of opinion, telling Danvers to « fight for the future. »

The pace of the issue is incredibly quick, with weeks being skipped at a time, resulting in the two deaths in just the first issue. So just how dead are these characters? Well, Rhodey was being groomed for a political future in the comics – but he had a hole blown through essentially his entire torso by Thanos. It’s tough to come back from that – he did, for a time, have nanobots both inside him and as his armor, so someday, when someone wants to bring him back, it’ll likely be via something involved with that. She-Hulk doesn’t technically die on-panel here, either. The longtime Avenger, Jen Walters, does flatline, and the ensuing panic – and crying Carol Danvers we showed up top, seems like a bad sign for her future.

2016 – New Concept Art Reveals Details From Sam Raimi’s Cancelled SPIDER-MAN 4

A new series of concept artwork has made its way online via Reddit, showing some of the characters we could have seen in Sam Raimi’s cancelledSpider-Man 4, including one that might surprise

Fans were left disappointed when director Sam Raimi departed from the Spider-Man franchise due to creative differences. Despite the mixed reception to Spider-Man 3, Raimi was keen on doing another film, before departing the project due to Sony wanting more say in the film’s story. After the project was scrapped entirely, Sony went on to reboot the series with the two Amazing Spider-Man films. Raimi’s story for the planned fourth film was known to have included the Vulture and Felicia Hardy (seen below), but now some new artwork has revealed that Mysterio was set to have a role in the film as well…and he looks eerily similar to actor Bruce Campbell, who appeared in three different roles throughout the series. Felicia Hardy also resembles Angelina Jolie in the concept art, though Anne Hathaway was being lined up to play the role. Check out the art below!

Star Wars Le triangle de l’Obscur : Le Fan Film est disponible ! | Star Wars HoloNet

Hugh Jackman Preparing For Final Wolverine Movie Sporting New Beard

With his relatively small role in X-Men: Apocalypse out of the way, Hugh Jackman is free to focus on training for his final solo movie outing as James “Logan” Howlett in the sequel toThe Wolverine. Photos from Jackman’s Instagram feed suggest that, in addition to training his body, Jackman is also getting his facial hair into shape.

Several photos show Jackman with a full beard, which is a step up the character’s signature mutton chop that Jackman has sported in his previous appearances. Fans of Wolverine comics may remember that the mutant had a similar look in the “Old Man Logan” storyline on which The Wolverine sequel is said to be loosely based.

Here’s a sampling of the photos from Jackman’s Instagram:

“Old Man Logan” is a story by Kingsman creator Mark Miller and Civil War artist Steve McNiven that ran in the pages of Wolverine in 2008 and 2009. The dystopian future tale caught up with Logan in a world where the supervillains had finally banded together and defeated the heroes of the Marvel Universe. During the onslaught, Mysterio used his illusions to trick Logan into murdering the X-Men. Since then, Logan refused to pop his claws, opting to live a quiet life on a farm with his wife and two children. The story begins with Logan desperate for money to pay rent to his landlords, the Hulk family. To get the money, he agrees to join the now blind Hawkeye on a cross country trip across the wasteland that is the United States.

Many of the characters included in “Old Man Logan” are not available for Fox to use in the film, so fans should expect some substitutions. For example, Professor X (played once more by Patrick Stewart) is expected to replace Hawkeye as Logan’s travelling partner. Boyd Holbrook and Richard E. Grant have been cast as the film’s villains, with Holbrook reportedly playing a ruthless corporate type and Grant described as a “mad scientist” type. Some have speculated that Holbrook’s character may have a connection to Weapon X, while Boyd may be the manipulative geneticist Nathaniel Essex, a.k.a. Mister Sinister.

The Wolverine director James Mangold is returning to direct the sequel. The film stars Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Eriq La Salle and Elise Neal.

FX has picked up « Legion » for an eight-episode first season. According to Marvel.com, the X-Men-based series — which hails from FX Productions and Marvel Television — is set to debut on the network in early 2017. Production on the show will begin this summer in Vancouver.

« We’ve come to expect excellence from Noah Hawley and, with ‘Legion,’ he has delivered another major creative achievement, » said President of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions Nick Grad in a statement. « Just as he did in reimagining ‘Fargo,’ he is bringing an entirely new aesthetic and sensibility to the enormously popular and richly represented X-Men world. The pilot episode is stunning, driven by incredible performances from Dan Stevens, Aubrey Plaza, Jean Smart, Rachel Keller and the rest of the cast. We join our producing partners at Marvel in congratulating the creative team for what they’ve accomplished and are as excited as the fans for the premiere of ‘Legion’s’ first season. »

« Marvel Television is thrilled to not only have our first partnership with FX go to series, but working with the enormously talented Noah Hawley makes it even better, » added Executive Producer and Head of Marvel TV, Jeph Loeb. « From the first time we heard Noah’s vision to his exceptional script and cast through the extraordinary filming of the pilot, we knew the series would be incredible. »

The show comes from « Fargo » showrunner Noah Hawley and stars « Downton Abbey’s » Dan Stevens as David Haller, the son of Charles Xavier and a man with mental illness and haunted by voices in his head. « Legion » will also star Aubrey Plaza, Jean Smart, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Rachel Keller and Katie Aselton.

« Legion » is in development at cable network FX, with Hawley on board as a producer. According to the official description, « Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees might be real. »
